Kaiser Uses Electronic Health Records to Reduce Hip Fractures
11/11/09
Researchers at Southern California Kaiser followed 650,000 patients enrolled in the Healthy Bones Program from 2002 to 2007 and were able to demonstrate a 38% reduction in hip fracture. They estimate that with the program they were able to prevent 970 hip fractures in 2007.
The success of the program is based on the use electronic health records to identify and target high risk patients. of The Kaiser Healthy Bones Program gathers information about patients on osteoporosis treatments, bone density and fractures and then targets patients at risk for hip fractures to ensure they receive good follow-up care.
For more information on the study is published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery Online.
