Dr. Steven L. Teitelbaum - Osteoclasts: What Do They Do and How Do They Do It?

Steven L. Teitelbaum M.D. is the Wilma and Roswell Messing Professor of Pathology at Washington University School of Medicine. Teitelbaum’s research focuses on bone cell biology for the purpose of developing new treatments for the prevention and cure of diseases such as osteoporosis. He has served as President of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, the largest federation of biological scientists in the world, a position which enabled him to educate legislators and the public about stem cell research. Teitelbaum also served as President of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. He has received numerous awards for his leadership including the most distinguished accolade of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the William F. Neuman Award. In 2004, he received the Second Century Award from Washington University School of Medicine, and in 2006, the Rous-Whipple Award from The American Society for Investigative Pathology.

Dr Ettinger is clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and Adjunct Investigator at Kaiser Permanente’s Division of Research. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Dr Ettinger completed his medical residency on the Harvard service of Boston City Hospital, and a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the Metabolic Research Unit of the University of California, San Francisco.
Having spent 35 years in the practice of endocrinology and internal medicine, Dr Ettinger has gained considerable practical knowledge of the management of endocrine disorders. His research, based on epidemiologic studies and clinical trials, has focused on prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis and appropriate use of estrogen replacement therapy. A prolific contributor to the medical literature on these and related topics, Dr Ettinger is author or coauthor of more than 170 peer-reviewed scientific publications in addition to textbook chapters. His contributions to our understanding of health issues in the menopause have led to his being past president of the North American Menopause Society.

Dr. Susan Ott
Dr. Ott is Associate Professor of Medicine at the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle Washington. She graduated from Stanford University
and earned her medical degree from the University of Washington. Dr. Ott did her residency in Family Practice and Internal Medicine and her Fellowship at the University of Washington in the Division of Nephrology.
Dr. Robert Klein
Dr. Klein is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Clinical Nutrition, at Oregon Health & Science University. Dr. Klein received his medical degree from the University of California-San Francisco. He completed his residency at New York Hospital-Columbia University Medical Center and his Fellowship in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at UCSF. Dr. Klein became board certified in Internal Medicine in 1983 and in Endocrinology in 1987.

Dr. Bilezikian is Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology at the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Columbia University and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Director of the Metabolic Bone Diseases Program at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Bilezikian received his undergraduate training at Harvard College and his medical training at the College of Physicians & Surgeons. Dr. Bilezikian trained in Metabolic Bone Diseases and in Endocrinology at the NIH where he served as a Clinical Associate in the Mineral Metabolism Branch under the tutelage of Dr. Gerald Aurbach.
Dr. Bilezikian is a major national and international spokesperson for the field of metabolic bone diseases. His major research interests relate to the clinical investigation of metabolic bone diseases, particularly osteoporosis and primary hyperparathyroidism. His publications, numbering over 450, speak to his active original investigative initiatives as well as his demand as an author of many reference sources of endocrinology and metabolic bone diseases.
2006
Dr. Lawrence Raisz
Dr. Lawrence Raisz is head of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He established their interdisciplinary research program in bone biology and his research in bone metabolism has been funded by NIH for 38 years.
Dr. Raisz began his career in 1948, focusing on renal physiology at New York University's Bellevue Medical Center. He has held positions at the SUNY College of Medicine at Syracuse; conducted research at Strangeways Research Laboratory in Cambridge, England; and was chief of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Rochester.
In the early 1970's, Raisz developed new methods for studying bone formation and discovered the first cytokine that stimulated bone resorption. He is currently studying the effects of prostaglandins on bone metabolism.
Dr. Raisz blends clinical care, research, and teaching. He is recognized nationally and internationally for his achievement and meaningful scholarship in bone biology research and his excellence in the clinical care of patients with osteoporosis. He was the scientific editor of the Surgeon General's Report on Osteoporosis and Bone Health.
