How to Find a Doctor

How can I find the right health care provider for me?

If you have osteoporosis, you have probably already realized how important it is to find a physician with knowledge and experience with the disease. Doctors within several different specialties treat osteoporosis, as well as physical therapists. Below, FORE has gathered several national resources to make this search easier for you. And don't forget to check out our "Questions to Ask Your Doctor" before your visit.

National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF)
How to Find a Doctor
The first webpage to visit for a review of the issues around choosing a doctor and which medical specialties to consider.

Professional Partner Network
NOF's directory of physicians specializing in osteoporosis prevention and treatment.

The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) [pdf document]
Menopause Clinician List for USA
NAMS, a professional organization for health care providers, compiled this list of members who provide health care for women in menopause and beyond. Updated June 2002.

American Physical Therapy Association (APTA)
This professional organization for physical therapists offers two routes for patients to find a therapist specializing in osteoporosis care.

(A) See the Directory for Geriatric Certified Specialists, on the web and choose "Geriatric" for Expertise, and your state, or call 1-800-999-2782 ext. 2782 and request the directory.

(B) Locate a women's health PT in their online directory or call the APTA Section on Women's Health, 800/999-2782 ext. 3229. They can provide you with the contact information for one of your state's Women's Health representatives, who can assist you with finding a local therapist specializing in osteoporosis.
